Braai Essence
Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to the FAQ section. Whether you're a first-time griller or a seasoned pitmaster, we’ve gathered the most common questions to help you master the art of Braai Essence. 1. Getting Started & Usage Q: Do I need to soak the Braai Essence unit in water before use? A: No need! One of the biggest advantages of Braai Essence is that it is ready to use immediately. Soaking wood often just delays the smoke and creates steam. Our unit is designed to produce clean, consistent smoke from the moment it hits the heat. Q: How much heat should I apply? A: Braai Essence does not require a lot to get going, we always recommend starting off low and increase if needed. If there’s large amounts of white smoke too much heat is applied. Q: How do I know when it’s working? A: After placing the unit on your heat source (foil-side down), you will almost instantly smell the aromatic flavours starts releasing. More volatile, lighter aromas will release first, and deeper wood tones will persist till the unit is done. Q: How long does one Braai Essence unit last? A: Depending on your braai’s temperature, a single unit provides active aroma for approximately 45 to 90 minutes (on very low heat). This is the "Golden Window" for flavour, as most meat absorbs the majority of its smokey character and flavours in the first hour of cooking. Q: Can I reuse a unit if I only braai for 20 minutes? A: We recommend using a fresh unit for each session. Once the wood and botanicals has been heated and charred, it loses the essential oils that provide the aromatic flavour. 2. Compatibility Q: Will Braai Essence work on my gas braai? A: Absolutely! Place the unit directly on the flavorizer bars (the metal tents over the burners) or on the grill grate itself. Ensure the lid is closed to trap the aromatics. Q: Can I use it on a charcoal kettle or open braai? A: It works perfectly on kettle-style braais (like a Weber). For open braais, you can still use it, but the flavour will be more subtle. For maximum impact, we always recommend using a lid to "bathe" the meat in smoke. Q: Is it safe for ceramic/Kamado grills? A: Yes. Simply place it on top of your glowing coals before you add your ceramic deflector plate or grill grate. 3. Smoke Quality & Flavour Q: What is "Angry Flame" and why does Braai Essence avoid it? A: "Angry Flames" occur when loose wood chips catch fire. This creates a thick, bitter white smoke (creosote) that ruins the taste of the meat. Braai Essence uses a shielded design to ensure the wood smolders but never catches fire, giving you a cleaner, sweeter flavour. Q: Will it make my food taste bitter? A: Not at all. We’ve designed the Essence to produce "Clean Blue Smoke." By preventing the wood from burning and filtering out harsh impurities, we ensure your meat gets a rich, savory finish. 4. Troubleshooting & Safety Q: There is no smoke coming out. What should I do? A: Smoke requires heat. If your braai is at a very low temperature it may take longer to start. Try moving the unit directly over a burner or a hotter patch of coals to "jumpstart" the smolder. Q: Is Braai Essence safe for the environment? A: Yes. We use 100% natural, sustainably sourced hardwoods and botanicals. There are no chemicals, glues, or artificial accelerants in our product. Q: My unit caught fire—is this normal? A: While rare, a flare-up can happen if the unit is exposed to direct flames, extreme heat or dripping fats and oils. Simply move the unit to a slightly cooler part of the grill, or close the lid to stop the flame and return to a smolder.
